About the Production

A Holy Week folk drama, this October in Lucena

A new full-length Filipino play by Marco Antonio Rodas, set over four days of Holy Week in Dolores, Quezon.

Anino ng Suob is a new full-length Filipino play by Dr. Marco Antonio Rodas, a Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards awardee, co-directed by Rodas and John Lenard Casiño. It runs for 17 performances at the Pacific Mall Event Theatre in Lucena City this October.

The play takes place over four days of Holy Week in Dolores, Quezon, in the early 2000s — a town where faith healing, folk Catholicism, and Rizalista devotion are part of ordinary life. At its center is the suob: the ritual smoking of a person with tawas, kamanyang, incense, and dried palm. For the family in the play, it is both medicine and inheritance, a practice they live by and rarely question.

Anino ng Suob is the 18th production of Dulayan Theater Organization, Inc., a Lucena City company founded in 2013 as KATAGA–Lucena Tanghal and accredited by the SEC and the National Youth Commission. Under Rodas as Artistic Director and Evalyn Cuarez as Managing Director, the company’s work draws on the history and culture of Quezon, from Dolores (2013) and Igba (2014, 2016, 2018) to Na’ay Po, Lambanog (2024) and Kunswelo (2025).

The production is designed by a team from across Quezon. Arch. Dolan Kim Reyes of 360D Architects designed the set; Rodas designed the lighting, with Zedric Lorzano apprenticing; Glacy Ricablanca, with the company since its 2017 Dolores, handled costume and make-up; Christopher M. Fernandez, a 2025 Natatanging Anak ng Lucena for Visual Arts, built the props; and Kyle Anunciacion, who wrote the 2024 Tara Na sa Quezon theme, designed the sound.

Anino ng Suob is performed in Filipino, with passages in Latin. Performances run October 16–18 and 22–25, 2026 at the Pacific Mall Event Theatre, Lucena City. Tickets, group rates, and school block bookings are available at tickets.dulayan.org.

The Story
